“Love, Hate, Skate is, as Abby Langh’s production company is aptly named, a lesbian fantasy. The only inhabitants in this glamorous, Old Hollywood palimpsest are diverse queer women, and the tensions within this world manifest in figure skaters facing off against roller skaters, as opposed to homophobia or misogyny. The film reclaims the aesthetics of a bygone era of cinema that queer women once had to scan between layers of Hayes codes to find themselves in. Sensuality is liberating and celebrated, and while this world may sound perfect, the pressures of a gaze still consume women, even if the source of said gaze is female. Peggy encounters the all-too-relatable struggle of self-depreciation and she must learn to love herself if she’s ever to love another woman...or women.I am convinced that we need films like Love, Hate, Skate now more than ever to redefine these classical aesthetics for queer women of diverse backgrounds and experiences. We won’t be erased, but we won’t pander either - our expression of sexuality in Love, Hate, Skate is unapologetic, our embrace of genre is bold, and our zest for these characters as artists is rough and radiant.”
